Your earliest encounters?

I think recently that we discussed the DigiComp
plastic binary adder (with stick-on paper 1 and 0!),
but preceding that, I was involved with wiring up
NOR gates with OC200 or OC201 transistors for the
school's first "computer".

This was about 1966 when I was 15.

Hands-on, it was a Digi-Comp I, in 1971, but I think before that,
I bought a biorhythm printout at the mall generated by an IBM 1130.
And I was with my parents one day at some affair in the late 60s,
and saw what I think was an IBM 1620. I'm not sure, but my memory
leads me to think the knob I saw on this machine looked like the
MAR Display Selector on the 1620.

My first hands on one was a Wang 2200 in the early/mid 1970's. My school would borrow one for a few weeks at a time.

Then built an Cosmac Elf based on the 1802. One of these days, I'd love to see or get my hands on a Wang 2200 again.

My uncle took me to his place of work, where I got to play with a
Univac 1004. This was like an electronic version of the IBM 407,
still programmed by plugboard but with 961 6-bit bytes of real core.
Its card reader and printer ran at 400 cards/lines per minute.
This particular machine used 90-column cards, although an 80-column
model was available. (The card reader could handle both, you just
needed a different punch.) I still have the manuals.

ISTR on the 1802 to have to go round the houses in order to

Not sure, but I'm sure it was approved.

I used a similar beast at Darlington 6th form college. Used screw-in
flash lamp bulbs to display memory content. Had to fill it full of "1"
bits and tighten all the bulbs. Designed by Hector Parr

who was the Music teacher, and built by the pupils...

Yes, they were funny little cpu's. There are yahoo and facebook groups on them. In fact you can get get kits to build a simple computer based on one.

So you *really* mean that the 1802's *are* funny little CPU's... as the
1802 is still being used!!!

True, I should have said are. Sometimes, my typing gets ahead of my thinking or the other way around. I have an Elf 2000 and getting ready to build a Quest Super Elf reproduction.

It's true that the 1802 is an older processor, but it still has some
life left in it yet! :-)
