I was going to note that, but I saw you had done so already. I wondered if Mr. Jinks' first name was Hiram. A web search found no confirmation of that, but it turned up other interesting tidbits. A 1913 movie, Fool Luck, starred Dave Coburn as a human character named Mr. Jinks. And in the '50s, there was a forgotten TV series, based on a book by the author Paul Gallico, titled The Adventures of Hiram Holliday. It starred the well-known character actor Wally Cox.

There are current gaming joysticks that look like a mouse, but I haven't used one of those. I have, however, tried a *trackball* as a substitute for a mouse. And green monochrome monitors were supposedly better than white.
Then, it was amber.

At the time, there was a 2-player football arcade game with
trackballs. Lots of hand motion during plays!

ISTM it would have the same awkwardness as a trackpad.

My wireless keyboard has a little trackball built in. It works reasonably well. It talks to the machine that I have in the living room, plugged into the TV, and I use it from my lap, where a mouse would be inconvenient. -- /~\ cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid (Charlie Gibbs) \ / I'm really at ac.dekanfrus if you read it the right way. This brings home how much comples technology is available nowadays for only a few pence after auto assembly by pick and place machines, as opposed to the expensivemechanical assembly needed for a roller ball mouse. My guess is that the optical mouse takes a succession of photographs and then by comparing the pixels of successive frames calculates the distance and direction travelled. Presumably a DSP in addition to a CCD device. possibly more computing power that went to the Moon with the Apollo landings?
