Speaking of terminal concentrators, at BYU we had a PDP-10 as the main engineering host, and across campus was a room full of terminals, all managed by a PDP-8, which gathered up the inputs, spat them across to the DEC-10 and routed the replies back to the proper terminals. The hardwired terminals on the DEC-10 ran at a blindingly fast :-) 2400 baud. The terminals across campus ran at 300 baud, because the PDP-8 couldn't handle the traffic at 2400 baud for each terminal. The following year, when I returned to school, all the PDP-8-managed terminals were running at 1200 baud. Still not as fast as the hardwired boxes, but four times as fast as before. I asked one of the admins how they had squeezed out extra speed, and he said that whan they had discovered that 2400 baud was too fast for the PDP-8, someone had decided just to drop back to 300 baud, without even trying any other line speeds! he ahd decided to try 1200 baud, and it worked. Boy. All those hours at 300 baud for no reason. Steve -- Bad writing is only bad when it thinks it is good or, worse, doesn't care. Scott Rice

Boy. All those hours at 300 baud for no reason. You think that's bad! At my prep. school we had a PDP-11/33 that was connected to a bunch of VT100s at 9600 baud, and to a larger number of VT55s at 1200 baud. Everyone hated using the VT55s because they were so slow. Then we found out how to change the baud settings on the computer and at the terminals and found it was all just a stupid mistake. The VT55s could do 9600 with no problem. Think of all that wasted time at 1200 baud waiting for EDT to redraw the screen. Wa! ChristianM
