Pressing the shift/alt or other normally non-transmitting keys is
NOT a silly thing to do. Before PCs, many terminals had a "screen saver"
that blanked the screen after some time of inactivity.
My Wyse terminal will go back to normal by pressing a SHIFT key.
That way, I don't transmit anything but start the timer again.

My PC has a screen saver. It's waken up by pressing ANY key since
*ALL* keys on the PC keyboard transmit codes, even the CONTROL, ALT and shift.

Face it: your secretary was ahead of her times!

The same works for the default screen saver under X windows.
