In article <31...@nigel.ee.udel.edu>, bou...@freezer.it.udel.edu (Tom Boutell) writes... >You're absolutely right; the poor bastard had a perfect right to ask for >silly hyphenation stories, and silly hyphenation stories he'll get. > >I have one, although it's not strictly a hyphenation story; actually, >it's a word wrap story. In the early days of the TRS-80 Model I (long >may it be remembered, for those not still RUNNING one- no, I haven't >been around QUITE that long, I started with a III) there was a word >processor called Electric Pencil, and it was good, 'cuz there >wasn't nuttin' much else. But Electric Pencil's word wrap algorithm, >while perfectly proficient if the line *contained* a space, didn't work >so well... Well, as one of those ANCIENT Mod I users (though, I have to admit that my '386 gets more use these days), I remember that in Electric Pencil version 2 there were a couple of other interesting bugs related to word-wrap. If you went up one line from the end of a paragraph and tried to insert text at column 63 (the Mod I screen is 64 columns by 16 rows) it would put in an extra blank line with a scrambled Copyright notice. On the other hand, it didn't _always_ do this, probably deciding based on the phase of the moon or the linear distance to Ganymede or something. Then there was the widely pirated Freaked Version of Pencil, where some unknown combination of events would trigger the "message switch," which would cause all the messages to change around. The ones I remember were quotations from Marx (Karl, that is), something about Orcs invading, and something else about Ronald Reagan. Also it changed all the error messages to "ROYAL F*CKUP!" ___Samuel___ _________I_claim_and_accept_sole_responsibility_for_the_above._SjG.____________ "What did it mean to fly | <gold...@aerospace.aero.org> | Ja, und a tremor in your soul | | wer hat to resist the dull insistence | Order is a special case | das of gravity" - the Camper | subset of Chaos | Gesagt? ______________________________/_\______________________________/_\_____________
