Knuth, to my knowledge, hasn't written anything on operating systems or
artificial intelligence. (That doesn't mean, however, that others haven't
directly applied his research to topics in those fields.)

Trivia Question: Give the title, date, and journal name of Don Knuth's
first publication.

Gee, wasn't it an article about metric measurement in Manufacture And Design
Magazine?

Easy. _The Potrezebie System of Weights and Measures_, MAD Magazine 33

Yeah, I know, someone (identifier lost in the shifting bits of time)
posted it to the net some time back, and I saved it.

Was the Knuth-Bendix algorithm for extracting simplification rules out
of algebraic theories originally a problem of abstract languages or AI? The
algorithm has certainly been used in computational logic afterwards..

He did do at least one (arguably) on AI: an analysis of the alpha-beta
pruning algorithm, which is only useful for things that are a whole lot
like game-playing.

Speaking of D. Knuth, does anyone know if he intends to write the final four
volumes of THE ART OF COMPUTER PROGRAMMING? The Table of Contents sure looked
interesting. :^)

I recently got a card-pack from A-W publishing that included one
asking if I wished to bo notified when Vol. IV was released. Made it
sound as if it was going to be in the not too distant future.

I spoke with Knuth's editor (I didn't know that he was the editor until he
told me) in March '90 and he said Knuth was working hard on volume IV and
that it would be out sometime soon. He also indicated that he didn't have
much control over when it was finished :-).
