Unless every line is linked this way, you're still being slowed down,
albeit trivially, to process the link. If every line _is_ linked this
way, you're being slowed down as if every line is separated by a comment
whether it is or not. Whether this is a good or bad thing is probably
open to debate (isn't everything?).

So if LET statement 10 is followed by REM (comment) lines 20, 30, and 40, and LET statement 50, the link in line 10 points to line 50. A lot of trouble, but we wanted to make very sure that no one had any excuses not to use comments. -- John Shipman/Zoological Data Processing/Socorro, NM/jo...@jupiter.nmt.edu ``Let's go outside and commiserate with nature.'' --Dave Farber

The discussion about cards reminds me of a tale told by a lecturer at Cambridge. He had worked for IBM at some point (and was the most vocal anti-IBM faculty member). Anyway, a favorite theme of his was IBM's staunch efforts at co-operation with the rest of the industry in producing universal standards :-). Once he said that they were in the midst of standards negotiations on cards when they broke off the talks to introduce the 96-column punched card. I have never heard corroboration of this. Anyone got more info? This is news. This is your | Peter Scott, NASA/JPL/Caltech brain on news. Any questions? | (p...@aristotle.jpl.nasa.gov)

A good and worthy cause. I like it (for whatever that's worth). BASIC
programs generally need all the commenting they can get (and usually more
than they do get).
