I've been told by those technically wiser than myself that you never have to worry about burn-in for color screens. That there is a difference in them such that you could leave your computer display on forever and ever and ever and it wouldn't burn in. Now I've seen non-color monitors burn in. It's not a pretty sight :) but have I been sold a load of goods (so to speak)? Is my screen saver for my color mac unneeded? Can I leave my VGA monitor for my pc on and not worry about having to see ghost images of my editor and program from now on? Thanks for any informed opinions. !uunet!microsoft!larryh Microsoft doesn't edit outgoing posts, and I'm quite pleased about it.

Nope. They burn in. Walk up to a coin-operated video game and look closely. Even the expensive ones burn. Sun has a great screen blanker for their workstations. :-) ----- quintro!bpdsun1!r...@lll-winken.llnl.gov uunet!tiamat!quintro!bpdsun1!rmf

I would have to disagree with this. I have seen arcade video games
with color screens and plenty of burnout. Probably not as bad as severe
monochrome burnout, but still very noticable.
Related note: I saw a picture of an o'scope screen with a hole
drilled through it *from the inside*. Now THAT was screen burnout.

Sorry, wrong. Our ATMs have color touch screens. We go to a lot of
trouble to keep the screens from burning in and they still do, eventually.
It's a major maintenance headache.

Burn in is caused by some areas of the phosphors on the screen being desensitized by constant driving by the electron beam . This can happen on ANY crt screen, be they color, B+W, oscilloscope tubes, etc. On a color monitor, you will see color ghosts of the color complement to the image that caused the burn in. If you mean the "game of life" simulator, I've seen Sun screens with
little Sun logos burned all over them from letting it run for days. Some
screen saver. )-:
