I find much of the discussion of limitations on account granting most depressing. I'm fortunate enough to share a 177 megabyte partition with only two other consultants. It makes me feel guilty that you could almost fit two normal accounts in the executable for my senior project (1.4 megabyte c++ binary with debugging symbols and libg++, Xaw, Xt, Xmu, Xext, Xlib statically linked, no help for that). I don't look forward to the day when Those In Power start moving normal users onto this partition to relieve the overcrowding on others. I guess I'll have to clean out my X utility/game source tree or move :) I do look forward to the day when you can buy your own disk storage. I want to be able to brag about having an 80 meg account without offending those who have an 800K account. But right now I hear 40 meg disk drives don't take too well to frequent relocations and cost several hundred dollars. The guys down at CIRCA would never give me more than 300 blocks (150K). I can bring in a floppy that beats that. Now if I can only talk them into mounting it :) Needless to say, their policy has bred a hardy breed of starving hackers that scour the system for unmonitored resources, a-la Tron. Then these hackers move up to CIS, discover /tmp and don't know what to do with all the space. Takes all the challenge out of it. THOTH out -=O=- --- I once had a terabyte account but I didn't know where to put it. -- ( My name's not really Gilligan, It's Robert Forsman, without an `e' )

Did you maybe mean 400 meg drives? Or just 40 meg that can be connected into the beach/mosquito/etc Sun net? 40 megabytes of hard drive is getting pretty cheap (depending on where you shop), and can be had in formats that are quite portable (not just PC-style hard cards, but things about and inch and a half high and about as big as a large papaerback novel in the other dimensions). Getting it linked into the network is another matter, of course. Thus my exploration of a Sun for my very own home system...looking for 1G + of hard drive space. Computing power definitely belongs to the users, of course. Bob

I'm fortunate enough to share a 177 megabyte At Caltech computer accounts are free. Students can have accounts on a VAX/VMS cluster of 4 machines, Suns, NeXTs not to mention the accounts they get through classes and the departments. Every dorm has a computer room with at least two Macs and several PCs... Now if only the people here would use them to their fullest extent... > I do look forward to the day when you can buy your own disk storage. You can. The NeXT comes with a read/write optical drive. I have a 256meg disk with 60megs of data on it. ($50 a disk, $1 for 5meg. You can't beat that.) >-- >( My name's not really Gilligan, It's Robert Forsman, without an `e' [ Carlos Salinas car...@eeyore.caltech.edu (a NeXT)
