We have wood heat/cooking plus bottled propane backup for cooking in
hot weather. Water is hand-pumped. The gen set in the woodshed isn't
wired into the house. A 100' extension cord run through a port bored
through the house wall feeds the fridge and freezers if an outage is
more than a few hours.

As for oil heat vs. electric or other fuels: If you have a leak of
long duration or catastrophic damage to your fuel oil tank, you can be
in for environmental cleanup, depending on you location and how
quickly & effectively you can deal with it yourself, on the low order
of $10^4.

Lights, computers, other appliances aren't "critical" but can run off
the gen set if need justifies enduring the background noise and
fuel.
