In 1986 I worked for a company that had a DEC wordprocessor which turned out to be a PDP-8. One day a DEC-technician arrived to repair something in the machine. To my surprise the machine still had core in it. When the repair was finished, the technician asked if we were interested in a special demo program he had. Sure, we're always interested. The technician took an AM-radio from his toolbox and installed it next to the machine. He tuned in on a certain frequency indicated on the radio. Next he removed some panels from the PDP-8, uncovering the core. He started a program from floppy which provided a menu from which you could choose a song. You also had to specify the kind of terminal and what type of floppy-drives were connected to the machine. Then, we could hear the song on the radio!! The two DX-type floppy drives ware mistreated as drums (they make an awful noise when the head is loaded on the floppy!). The program also transmitted CTRL-G's to the terminal to have it behave as another instrument. One of the most spectacular demo's I've ever seen. Actually it is very simple: the core generates interference when it is accessed. All your program has to do is to access the core in such a way that the correct interference is generated. The only problem is that your program also resides in the core, so any changes to the program may change the core's access-pattern, and subsequently changing the notes. Rob.
