David B. Greene (da...@sendnomailto.halcyon.com) wrote: : Anybody catch that recent PBS special, "Colors of Infinity," about the : Mandelbrot Set and fractal geometry? It was well hosted by Aurthur Clarke : with a cameo appearance by Stephen Hawking. Although the show was most : interesting, I thought Clarke waxed overly eloquent about the Mandelbrot : Set being the "Thumbprint of God" as though it opened up secrets of the : universe so profound as to be mystical. : What I wonder is, can the Mandelbrot set really be called something that : has always existed, as though it were part of the fabric of the universe, Consider if it did, and the universe could be modeled as a fractal in which the perimeter were infinite while the area finite. Consider if this were raised another dimension and the perimeter were interaction area and the area were volume. It would model the emptiness of matter, and the universe could at least converge on pure geometry and have arisen from nothing but mathematics. Maybe just an observation of an observer that were the first cause, like a Ray Stevens song. GMS http://www.svs.com/users/gmark
