Evenin' all,
A story has been circulating in the computer press and on Usenet (I've been
told it verbally by a couple of cow-orkers as well) over the last couple
of months, always attributed to different places (Novell and Gateway 2K have
both been mentioned, but more often "a well-known computer manufacturer").
I don't think this has been discussed before in alt.folklore.* -- if so,
feel free to ignore me.
The story:
Tech support person gets phone call from customer who says that "The cup
holder on my PC is broken and I am within my warranty period. How do I
go about getting it replaced?". The confused tech is stumped by this
assertion from the user, as far as he knows they don't ship computers
with cup holders.. Eventually, it transpires that the user has been using
(usually her, but sometimes his) CD drive's motorised loading tray as
a coffee-cup holder, and has managed to snap it off.
I've seen this in the "funny stuff" page at the back of virtually every
computer rag I've read over the last couple of months. The fact that
Novell have been mentioned a couple of times certainly helps point this
story towards ULdom, as Novell don't make PCs, to my knowledge.
Obviously, it's possible that people could be so stupid as to use their
CD drive as a cup holder, but since virtually anyone who uses a PC would
have seen a CD player at some point, or at least would have the brain
cells to rub together to work out that all the knobs and lights mean
that it's *not* just a pop-out cup holder, I'm pretty damn sceptical.
I dunno, but this story just screams "UL" at me..
