On the PDP-10 I worked on there was a relatively large bank of lights for the ALU register display. If I remember right the top 6 rows of 36 lights were displaying the register contents, and seeing that gave a few of us some ideas. It took a little while, but pretty soon we had hacked up a set of routines that would display pretty much any bit pattern in the ALU displays. Since the system had about 90% idle time, we could toss this job in and let it suck up spare time (displacing the null job) and display what we wanted to see. I heard it was a favorite trick of remote sites to display messages about the supposed parentage of the on-duty operator; at least until a passing VIP noticed the message slowly scrolling to the left... Ah, well, not as bad as sending a "mount tape" message with a push just after the operator left for the weekend. -- Russ Kepler, Basis International Ltd. ru...@bbx.basis.com phone: 505-345-5232
