It's quite true. Back in 1970 I checked 7 different encyclopedias and 36 other references for information on Mt. St. Helens. (If anyone is interested, my database on Cascade volcanoes is now up to 400 different articles.) Six of the seven encyclopedias stated that Mt. St. Helens is extinct. As for Mt. Rainier, all of them listed it as being extinct, although I know for a fact that it erupted at least 5 times in the 19th. century and is considered by the US Geological Survey to be both active and potentially very dangerous. Charles Wm. "also active and potentially dangerous" Dimmick "...and some rin up hill and down dale, knapping the chucky stanes to pieces wi' hammers like sae mony road-makers run daft -- They say it is to see how the warld was made!"
