It is true that the internal format of an APL workspace is undocumented. I suppose 
these days one could use a screen scraper... and, for that matter, newer versions 
of APL let you take a function and put its text into a matrix of characters. This 
allows for writing the cross reference utility in APL.

But it would not astonish me if newer implementations of APL, designed for use 
on microcomputers instead of mainframes, would not include means of 
communicating with the "outside world", as it were.
