I once shared a room in Boston with a QA person from Leading Edge (we were there for a SF convention). He was telling me about the meeting at which LE evaluated the IOMEGA storage system... The IOMEGA (Bernouli Box) system uses a floppy type disk spinning next to a flat plate. It is about as fast as a slow hard disk, and at that time held 10MB on an 8 inch disk. This was when 720k was big time. While a hard disk head flots over the media, in these ssytems the flexible media floats over the head. The IOMEGA salesman comes into a room full of people who have been having all sorts of trouble with shipping damage on their hard disks. Salesman takes out a cartridge and holds it up. "These units are shock resistant," he says, and scales it across the room like a frisbee. "Being sealed when not in use they are (kicks the cartridge back across the room) dust resistant." Then he wipe off the outside, drops it into the machine, and boots from it. He starts running a dBase demo, beating the hell out of the disk. "You can see that this is about as fast as your standard 10MB hard disk. And of course, even when running, the unit is (lifts the front of the case about 6 inches and drops it back on the table) still shock resistant." I'm told that the reactions were such total disbelief that some people refused to believe that there wasn't some trick involved. -- bill davidsen - sysop *IX BBS and Public Access UNIX davidsen@sixhub.uucp ...!uunet!crdgw1!sixhub!davidsen "Getting old is bad, but it beats the hell out of the alternative" -anon
