On may 12th, 1941 Konrad Zuse presented for the first time his Z3
machine to a group of visitors. The Z3 was the relay-based computer
that not only showed the principle of a computer, like his earlier Z1
and Z2, but really worked. Some Z3 highlights: programmability, binary
number system, floating point numbers.

To remember the 60th anniversary of the first really working computer
and thus the begin of a new aera, there will be this colloquium in
Berlin on friday, may 11th 2001. As a special event, a newly built
replicate of the Z3 machine will be presented, faithful in relay technology.

Free admission for this colloquium. For those who wonder about Zuse's
name in conjuction with this event: The ZIB is the center for scientific
computation in Berlin serving the many research facilities and universities
in town (www.zib.de). Horst Zuse is the son of Konrad Zuse, one of the
organizers and speakers; he's a senior lecturer in computer science at
Berlin Technical University.

PS: For descriptions of the early Zuse machines (mechanical memory in Z1,
relay technology in Z2 and Z3, the Zuse company ...) follow the links on
