I've recently bought a 43" LG HD Smart TV. Very impressed, and
(surprising to me) plays everything on my network, meaning I can retire
the (basic, no 2 channel recording) streaming box. The combination of
decent hardware (processor/RAM) and OS helps, I think.

I'd suggest having play in a shop - take a portable HD with some of your
files on.

I've also got a 'dumb' Samsung flat screen TV - it's fine, 10 years old
now. But I'm not a big fan of what I see as their intrusive 'privacy'
policy.
