And don't forget that the 360/20 wasn't compatible either.

Yes, it seems like Haanstra was right. But understandably, upper management did 
not want to compromise or distract from its vision... especially when System/360 
was a "you bet your company" effort. An SLT 1401 would have made many in IBM's 
sales force happy, which was what motivated Haanstra, but IBM as a whole needed 
to do everything in its power to maximize System/360 uptake.
