The PDP-6 I used, at Applied Logic in Princeton NJ, had a 680 running out of part of the 6's core to run the terminal lines. (For anyone not up on his DEC history, a 680 was a PDP-8 with a 681 terminal multiplexor which added both interface hardware and some new instructions that scanned characters to and from the terminal lines one bit at a time.
