"Commercial pilot" covers the experience spectrum between 250 flight
hours and 1500 flight hours. Airline pilots have to have a minimum of
1500 hours to get the license. Commercial pilots (that is what the
license is called, "commercial", and contrary to popular belief they
can carry paying passengers) have to have 250 flight hours of
experience, which isn't a whole lot.

However military pilots also get paid to fly, even during training,
and given the performance of the aircraft that they fly, the
conditions under which they operate, and the fact that some of them
have to land on a boat, this can be quite dangerous leaving aside
enemy action. I suspect that that skews the statistics.
