Micrsoft isn't selling new versions of Windows. They have stated that there isn't going to be another version after Windows 10. Windows XT????? Do you mean XP? If so, then you are a bit confused. Microsoft didn't "replace the ad-hoc code in 95/98/Me with the NT kernel", they just stopped selling that product line, which had served its purpose of motivating software and hardware developers to develop for the NT platform.
