Just so.  BTW, there is a word for those things: chyron. In case you
feel that this is a dirty word that should not appear on
family-friendly newsgroups, note that it has a nice rot13: puleba.

I haven't had a TV since the mid-70s but there's one always running in
the ceiling over the dentist's chair so I get periodic Mithridatic [1]
doses of the video chaos of which you speak.  It would be entertaining
to read the UX engineering [2] evaluations of fragmentation of
attention span versus the need to garner enough focus to imprint the
advertizing memes on the viewer versus the potential for MEGO &
irritation and viewer defection.
