The cookie recipe database was a famous use case, but as far as I can
tell it was dragged up as an attempt to justify a computer, not
something someone actually *created*.  Justifying a home computer was
really hard before the internet.

I keep some of that.  Bird observations, for example.
But that's because:

- All serious birdwatchers keep track, and always have.
  The data should survive longer than yourself.
  
- I'm too picky to use the online national database, being
  a Unix programmer and all.  If I write something down, it
  has to be text files under version control, fitting my own
  requirements.
