I was born in 1956; my grandmother's home was in a town with 150 people and an operator-run exchange until 1964. If you picked up the handset, you listened for a call in progress, and hung up if that was the case. If not, you rang the operator, who would come on and ask who you wanted to call. My grandmother's telephone number was three longs and two shorts. When direct dialing became available, that became 812-366-3424.
