Switchgear was engineered and built for a long service life. Before the 1980s, it was not unusual for removed switchgear to be transferred to another exchange where it was needed. This was commonly done for step-by-step offices--if an office was upgraded, the equipment would be moved to an office experiencing growth and needing more capacity. Of course, this all depended on the age and condition of the equipment being removed. Electronic equipment had the advantage of needing a much smaller footprint, and, required less maintenance.
