There is a difference between legal tender and legal currency. Scottish note are not legal tender anywhere (including Scotland IIRC) but they are legal currency. It is a subtle difference in definition and I would like to say that I know what that means but I don't. All I know is that you can refuse to take the money or you can accept it, it is your choice as a seller/provider of services. For a legal debt you cannot refuse legal tender in payment but you can refuse legal currency. this stops some councils from refusing to accept bills paid in pennies which are legal tender but only up to a certain value. I once had Scottish money refused in a restaurant in Shepperton which led to an interesting stand off where he refused the notes and I had no other money. He was refusing to let me leave until I had paid and I had no way to get other cash so he called the police who, after hearing that I had offered and he had refused to accept told me I could go. Suddenly Scottish notes were acceptable at that point. Oddly I left no tip. Andy
