Divestiture hurt the U.S. Proponents of Divestiture claimed it generated improvements and cost-savings, but those things came about from technology invented at Bell Labs (ironically enough) and other technical improvements. The marketplace was changing and even without Divestiture, Bell would've changed along with it--for instance, customers would've been allowed to own and be responsible for their own equipment and wiring.
