Many movies and TV shows used a generic sound effect of a
bell ringing to simulate a telephone call. Indeed, after
tone-ringers came out, many productions continued to use
a bell sound even though the 'correct' sound would've been
an electronic warble.

As an aside, it seems that phones in General Telephone
(independent territory) made by Automatic Electric had a
more pleasant ring than Western Electric Bell sets.
Sometimes Hollywood productions used non-Bell sets.
The typical viewer would not notice the difference, but
a phone historian would.

(Paramount TV shows used a very loud bell which is a bit
annoying in watching shows like Mannix.)

FWIW, our stage work had someone backstage ring a bell to
give the sound of a telephone ringing.

Many years ago producers would ask Bell for an unused number
and Bell would provide one. In more recent years, the 555
exchange has almost always been used.

As an aside, for decades, Bell used the number (311) 555-2368
(earlier KL 5-2368) as the number for phones in its ads.
