Why did Digital change the name from PDP to VAX? It seemed PDP had quite a following? Was it a major architecture change, or just marketing? I must admit decades ago programmers were very conscious of the make and model of their computer "I use a S/360-40. Well, _I_ use a S/360-65!. [whispered] I use a S/360-30." We even knew how much core memory we have. But once programmers got beyond the S/390, few knew--or cared--what mainframe they had. We've gone through several Z units, and most of my colleagues know nothing about it--except needing to come in on a Sunday to test applications after the physical changeover. I asked and was told what particular sub-model we had and how much 'core' memory, but to be honest, I don't remember. It still blows my find that one box now does the work of five IBM mainframes, and does it far faster and reliably.
