In one sense, I could see the school's point of view--technical manuals and the like usually don't deal with characters and emotion, and the other elements of 'literature'. Schools were very sensitive if kids were reading literature that contained sensual matter, such as uncensored Shakespear, especially if it was intended for older kids. (By the time we were seniors, some of the books we were assigned had some language and plots that probably wouldn't be good for a junior high kid*.) However, if a kid was reading general material of a higher grade, our schools were happy with that and rewarded the kid. * We were told to watch a Shakespear production on PBS. It turned out to have topless character. The boys who missed it were disappointed.
