We've got a 3083 which is the same way. However, upon power-up [as in,
it's been down for many hours], the noise from the disk drives has been
compared to standing next to a 747 firing up its engines. Once the
disks acclimate, they quiet down.
The 'fun' way to check up on the disk drives is to open up the side of
the DASD cabinet, and watch the big belt [shielded behind plastic!] go
'round and 'round and 'round ....
Ah, technology! :-)
