(with apologies to alt.folklore.computers, as this doesn't really relate, but was brought to my recollection by a posting under the "dumb users" subject line) There used to be an automotive shop here in Austin, named Bill's Auto Shop (spiffy name, eh?). Anyway, I was talking to one of the mechanics there, and he was telling me about a job he did on a car with some sort of weird electrical problem. He didn't go into detail, but said that by the time he had unraveled just what the trouble was, it was rather a complicated set of interactions, and would take quite a while to explain. Well, he just knew that when the owner of the car returned, he'd ask what the trouble had been, and the mechanic didn't want to get tied up for twenty minutes or more explaining just what he had had to do. So, when the owner, as expected asked what the trouble was, the mechanic just told him, "Well, it seems that you car had its volts mixed up with its amps." ... as the customer looked confused, then angry, and hissed, "I'm an electrical engineer. Now don't give me this shit. You tell me what was wrong with my car!" So of course, the mechanic found himself telling the story in great detail to an irate customer, anyway. -- Bad writing is only bad when it thinks it is good or, worse, doesn't care. Scott Rice
