Yes, it's nosy to read password files -- but fun! Did you ever read a LOT of passwords? Totally amazing! If you know the names of the WIVES of every man in your department, you probably know at least 40% of their passwords. If you know the name of the hottest TV SHOW on at the time, or the names of the lead characters therein, you probably know another 10%. How many passwords of "BART," "TWIN" or "PEAKS" are at your site?? Everything else is a color name, a team name, DAVE, PETE, or MARK. :-) Of course, security-conscious programmer dweebs pick more interesting passwords. But scan a big file of Joe User passwords some time! Since this is true, some sites make a big deal out of forcing users to select new passwords all the time, not allowing simple words, requiring numbers and letters mixed, etc. These are the BEST sites, because the wonderfully unguessable passwords are then written on Post-It Notes stuck to everyone's terminals. :-) -- I might have gone to West Point, but I was too / /\ Tom Neff proud to speak to a Congressman. -- Will Rogers /__/ \ tn...@bfmny0.BFM.COM
