It didn't always, though. I ran into that particular message on some program
or another that I had written and spent a good while trying to figure out what
had happened. I *think* that the actual message was 'Exit from uncalled
subroutine', and I finally tracked the problem down.

UCSD Pascal had an 'exit' statement that was used as 'exit (procname)'. And
of course, what had happened was that I had copied the code for a procedure,
renamed it and made a few other changes, and then run the program, but I had
forgotten to change the name in the exit statement. Thus, when I called
procedure 'a' (say), it tried to exit from procedure 'b'. Thus, the error
message meant exactly what it said.
