Here at CERN (the European Laboratory for Particle Physics) the magnetic stripe on one's ID card can be programmed to allow access to various experimental halls, beam tunnels, computer rooms, etc.; and this also allows the access computers to track how many people are in a given area (in case of fire, accident, etc.). Unfortunately, high energy physicists often work around really neat equipment that uses magnetic fields. Some people have a problem with needing their access card (and any credit/ATM cards they routinely carry) replaced periodically. --Frederick. -------------------------<< Frederick G.M.
