I guess that you've missed the problems with eelskin wallets?

I think it was the local paper that printed the suggestion that
the ellskin wallets somehow produced too much static that (I
guess magically) erased the magnetic stripe.

This in a town with a *serious* percentage of PHDs... 

Actually: a sufficiently large static discharge through a mag 
stripe *could* erase it through heating past the Curie(sp) point 
or by simply vaporizing it.  But such a discharge couldn't go 
unnoticed by the person carrying said card.

BTW: the eelskin wallets were being held closed by a thin 
magnetic clasp.
