Last year some time someone did a ps and noticed about 800 syslog processes hanging around and sent a message to system support (where a lot of system groupies, such as myself, hang out). I took a look and noticed that they all had the same parent (some random shell). I ran 'top' and killed the process from there. The load average was something nominal like 1 or thereabouts at this time. The screen updated about 5 minutes later, and the 1-minute load average was about 700 or so. It updated again a couple of minutes later, and more or less settled down after that. Never did quite figure out why it happened, but it was definitely fun to watch. -- ames >>>>>>>>> | Robert Krawitz <r...@think.com> 245 First St. bloom-beacon > |think!rlk (postmaster) Cambridge, MA 02142 harvard >>>>>> .
