Actually 3 -- one each at the UCLA Computing Facility (Boelter Hall), Western Data Processing Center (Graduate School of Management), and Health Sciences Computing Facility (Med Center). This was to have been the original ARPANET. Steve Crocker led development for it until someone in authority decided that such military-sponsored work was inappropriate for a public university. The plan was for the 7094's to be the hosts and for each to use a 360 model 40 as a communications processor. (Actually they requested model 50's, but got 40's.) The reason for the 360's was that they were the first easily available machines with a telecommunications capability, using 2701's. Perhaps it's fortunate that this earliest attempt at networking was cut down. Steve Crocker and others went on shortly afterward to develop the real ARPANET, and I'd guess the delay in development may have helped make it more easily accessible to sites using anyone's hardware and software -- not just IBM's. There's a UCLA Computer Club connection here too. Steve Crocker was president in the year I joined, 1962. A couple others who are well-known in networking and had Computer Club ties are Jon Postel and Vint Cerf. ---------------- Paul Raveling Rave...@isi.edu
