The modems (separate boxes from Ma Bell with telephone attached) could be used to call other Teletripes and what you typed would print on both machines. An uncoroborated story I heard was that someone got Alan Perlis's phone number (Perlis was then the head of the CS Dept and rated a home TTY). He called Perlis's machine, and started sending form feed characters to it. Perlis was at home at the time and had the presence of mind to type CTRL-E and got the remote's answer back drum to identify the miscreant. A phone call to the security office and a rent-a-cop walked the 50 feet to the terminal room and took care of the problem. Personal to Joe: !@%@$% quit triggering old memories! I have work to do!
