In article <6aie7.52269$e%3.8...@news2-win.server.ntlworld.com> Chris...@COLDmail.com (Chris Bigos) writes: >I wouldn't be surprised if the RPSB instruction (Repack Symbols) takes >the prize for the most complex instruction ever implemented in the >history of mainframe computing - certainly of the era. Any comments? >(I guess this should be a new thread - if there isn't one on this >topic already.) How would this compare with the infamous SLT (search list) instruction, which was available on certain 360s by RPQ. If anyone is interested, I might be able to dig up a couple of write-ups, one serious and one tongue-in-cheek. SLT's many implied operands gave the latter write-up its subtitle of "And you thought BXLE was bad?" Sperry->Unisys introduced (and quickly withdrew) a few microcoded monstrosities on their System 80 line of 370 workalikes in the '80s. I hung on to the pages which were to have been deleted by a subsequent update to the assembler manual. -- cgibbs@nowhere.in.particular (Charlie Gibbs) I'm switching ISPs - watch this space.
