Let's hear some more. This won't exactly work for you, and I don't recommend it, but it happened. A fellow I know (the asst prof in my exploding PDP/11 story actually) began his career as a system programmer for a large service bureau in the 1950's. One day he noticed that one of the customers, a physics prof at a nearby school, was getting very thick printouts and precious small bills. One day, his curiosity piqued, he was thumbing through the customer's card deck and discovered that the fellow had cracked the accounting system. He was charging other users for most of his time and disk space. So, did my pal confront the miscreant and cause a nasty scene? No. He just went into his files and tweaked a bunch of constants, just a bit. Do you have any idea what happens when pi becomes 3.2? Eventually the thief figured it out, but not until he'd published a couple papers with wrong results. When he confronted my friend he was given the choice of going quietly away or being prosecuted. He left.
