Look back at John Brunner's "Shockwave Rider", or even older, the original published version of "When Harlie was One" (I forget the author). The revision of "When Harlie was One" was a mistake. It was more technically accurate but the fiction lost something. > ... not to mention countless hardware and software developments created > by people who read his books and then said "Hmm... I wonder..." I can't think of any Gibson-inspired inventions, but Brunner's "Shockwave Rider" was most definitely the source of network worm programs, both good and bad. The folks at Xerox who developed worms gave him credit, and that work is still important in fault tolerant and distributed computing. Doug Jones jo...@cs.uiowa.edu
