One of the older systems guys in the legislative data center here (Harrisburg)
was an operator on one of Eckert and Mauchly's systems in Phila. (40s? 50s?)
He was a laid-off electician from Bethlehem steel, and since the systems
were electrical. . .
His stories of the mecury delay tanks are not for the faint of heart. He
tells me that his name is carved on the inside back panel of the ops console
now in the Smithsonian. A piece of history.
Will gladly relay questions if any. (he is now trapped on a VM/CMS system
that speaks only Bisync, no net :-( )
