GCOS stood for General Comprehensive Operating System (but we preferred to call it God's Chosen Operating System). I cut my teeth on these machines and have very fond memories of them. It seems everything started with a G or a GE, a hang over from the General Electric origins. Remember the MME's? MME GEBORT, MME GELOAD, etc.... GCOS was a really neat OS, and way ahead of it's time. True multitasking on multi CPUs, timesharing support, a powerful file sysetm (FMS), virtual memory support and lots of other features. Those were the days...... Jim Macura
