I have the experience of using a commercial grade bulk eraser (no not the
radio shack model) in a radio environment.

Since I used the tapes right after erasing them, I could tell just what it
took to erase them.

It wasn't easy to get a clean, like new-tape (reel to reel) without
putting the tape very close to the eraser (like an inch or less), and
thoroughly exposing all of the tape to the strongest part of the magnetic
field, the centre of the device.

The new engineers were always more casual about it, and often had good
work ruined by not being thorough enough with the bulk eraser.

So the point being, it isn't easy to erase anything even with the intent
of earsing it, and with good equipment. So doing it accidentally could
only be considered unlikely or extraordinary.
